After many years in the industry, I am witnessing something I have never seen before among clients and investors. Investment anxiety and fear are at all time highs. Life is short. Please relax.
With the start of the new school year, this week in our part of the country, one teacher caught my attention. Mrs. Brandy Young, who teaches second grade in Godly, Texas, sent home a note to all of her students’ parents saying,
“After much research this summer, I am trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year.
Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance. Rather, I ask you to spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success. Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside, and get your child to bed early.”
I believe Mrs. Young is on to something. Our academic experience also reflects that additional research, expenses, time and energy spent on trying to find ways to beat the market are futile.
I encourage clients and investors to work with a trusted, credentialed Investment Advisor to establish a sound investment plan. This long-term plan consists of creating a budget, using low-cost investments, with broad global diversification – a prudent lesson for us all. So please, go out there at this time of year and spend time with family, friends and loved ones. Don’t make checking your plan semi-annually, your daily homework.
